FORWARD

IT would be difficult to find another part of England so rich in historic  associations and so quaintly beautiful in antique architecture,  combined with such gems of sylvan beauty, as the interesting   County of Warwickshire.

As century succeeds century, the home of the immortal Shakespeare  attracts increasing numbers of pilgrims from all parts of the earth to pay  homage at the shrine of the great poet and metaphysician, and what  memories arise as the haunts that were dear to him are visited, and gazed  upon as he knew them in all their delightful old-world picturesqueness at   Stratford-on-Avon.

Scarcely less interesting are the frowning ruins of Kenilworth Castle, made doubly so by the historical romance of Sir Walter Scott, while the stately magnificence of Warwick Castle, rising in grandeur from the banks of the ever-gliding waters, guarding untold treasures of paintings  and antiquities, brings the "long dead past" vividly before us.

" Leafy Leamington" will also charm with its beautiful gardens,  promenades, and health-giving waters; while Tennyson has immortalised Lady Godiva and the Spires of Coventry—the town of ancient ceremonies and mystery plays.

Nuneaton has also played its part in literature, for is it not the country of George Eliot, and the scene of " Milby" in "Adam Bede," "Shepperton Church" and " Milly's Grave" in "Scenes of Clerical Life"?

A visit spent in this delightful neighbourhood, with its pure balmy atmosphere, its willow-kissed Avon, amidst the memories of great men, cannot fail to elevate and charm, and we believe this volume—on which no trouble or expense has been spared to make it a work of artistic beauty, characteristic of the county—will be appreciated by residents and visitors as a permanent memento, and the concise descriptive matter will prove interesting and instructive.
