St. Mary’s Courtyard 

ST. Mary’s Courtyard has special in­terest. We think of Gothic architecture as being an ecclesiastical style—simply because churches last longer than houses. But it is also a civic and domestic style. This is our “Cloth Hall of Ypres.” The weathered sculpture under the arch­way is good. On the keystone of the arch is a representation of God crowning the Virgin, who, with joined hands, is seated beside Him. Upon one of the projecting stones, from which the inward ribs of the arch spring, the Annunciation is sculptured. The outline of the Virgin and Angel with the lily between them can still he made out.
